Looking to infuse a little razzle dazzle in your diet? Go no further than Granville Island in June, where the Broadway Chorus will whisk audiences to 42nd street and back with their latest song-and-dance revue, Broadway Dreams (and Broken Promises).
In Broadway Dreams, there's no business like show business, as the Chorus performs such songs as "Broadway Baby" and "Life Upon the Wicked Stage" ... but not everyone can be a star, as we find out when we end up on "Skid Row." Things look brighter in Act Two, where in "Loveland" we discover the joys of "Summer Nights," the choices facing a "Beauty School Dropout," and ultlimately realise that "You Can't Stop the Beat." The show features show tunes from musicals such as Chicago, The Producers, and Hairspray. You'll never get a chance to be bored as the show whisks from one number to the next, from upbeat, toe-tapping dance numbers to heartfelt ballads that'll get the tears a-flowing, the eclectic show promises a little something for everyone.
Since 1999, the Broadway Chorus has been a rarity among musical groups in Vancouver, representing every age, profession and level of talent and making musical theatre accessible to anyone who wants to have fun. People may be surprised to learn that many of the Broadway Chorus have never performed in public before, says Lambert-Maberly. "People should expect to see a group of people from vastly different backgrounds, ranging from the extremely talented to the extremely enthusiastic, giving 100% to their songs and dances," he said. Audiences should not expect to see pretty voices standing still and singing – there are a lot of other choirs out there which fill that gap. "We're the lively, loud folk," he quipped.
Broadway Dreams runs from Thursday June 10th to Saturday the 12th at the Waterfront Theatre on Granville Island, with a discounted preview on June 9th. Performances are at 8:00pm. Tickets booked in advance are $15 for adults, $11 for seniors and students, and $11 for children 12 and under, and are $1 more at the door for unreserved tickets.
